Rest is Underrated

The first thing I notice when I haven’t slept much is that my skin starts feeling unhealthy: more red spots, more sensitive and brittle. All it takes is one night of only 5 hrs of sleep. We all know that 24 hours in a day is not nearly enough to do everything we want to do, so we often stay up late, either procrastinating (I do it too!!), or working, hanging out with friends…

But guys, think about it this way: sleeping a good night’s sleep will make you so much more productive tomorrow! One hour of working away at something in a half-slumber is way less productive than half an hour of attentive focus.

Secondly: sleep has been shown to literally clean your brain of your pollution while you sleep. See Jeff Iliff’s Ted Talk for enlightening scientific proof. So when you feel like your brain is cloudy, that’s exactly what’s going on.

Good news is, even meditation helps, so even if you can’t really fall asleep, try to practice mindful resting. Like just lay in bed and count the number of spots on your ceiling, or better yet, think about three positive things that happened that day. It’s not a surprise that happy people live longer.

Here’s a toast to rest and sleep!
